A Cloud of Trash @ Puttenahalli Lake

For the last seven years Pratham Books has been conducting 'One Day, One Story', an annual storytelling campaign that celebrates International Literacy Day on 8th September every year.
PNLIT has been part of this campaign for the last five years!

This year the selected book was A Cloud of Trash written by Karanjeet Kaur and illustrated by Bhavana Vipparthi. Theatre practitioner and filmmaker Surabhi Herur narrated and enacted this story much to the joy of 25 young children and their parents and grandparents who had assembled at the lake.

Here is what Ms. Vijayalakshmi Kutty, who attended the storytelling session, had to say:
Who doesn't like a good story? The young to the elderly love to hear a well-told tale. The story telling session had young children enraptured with a modern tale about an everyday problem - garbage. Recited with flair, vigour and vivacity, by theatre savvy, Surabhi Herur, the session had the children intellectually, emotionally and physically engaged at every stage, to explore an existential problem and together find solutions for it. A Cloud of Trash tells the story of a young girl with a burdensome cloud of garbage floating above her head at every moment. And that is the worrisome  story of our cities today which has to be told to our young ones. Surabhi brought the engaging session to a close with a collective, symbolic pledge to keep our environment clean.

Here are some moments captured beautifully by Vishnupriya Hathwar and Deepa Mohan.

A Special Story Telling - Save the Day - 12th Sep 2015

Children and Parents,

Let's celebrate International Literacy Day with "The Boy and the Drum" an engaging folk tale chosen especially for this year's event by Pratham Books. This book is special because it can be performed either as a play or read as a story.

With the talented Geetu and her Snehadhara team gearing up to tell the tale, we ourselves are agog to hear "The Boy and the Drum". Will it be a play? Will it be a story? Find out for yourselves on Saturday, 12th September 2015 at the Puttenahalli Lake from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Entry free.

Best regards
Usha

Note: International Literacy Day is observed on 8th September every year, by the United Nations' member countries

Planning for Story Telling Day on 7-Sep-2013

To celebrate International Literacy Day on 8th Sept., we would like to introduce children to the exciting world of reading with a story telling session at the lake. This is under the aegis of Pratham Books "One Day - One Story" initiative and will be held on Saturday 7th September 2013.

The story chosen this year is about Paplu, the little Giant who does not like to fight. His parents decide that he's unfit to be a giant so they shrink him and leave him in a village where he lives happily till....

Can you bring Paplu to life for our lil' kids? The book is available in five languages - English, Hindi, Marathi, Telugu and Kannada. Choose your language. Please email asap <puttenahalli.lake@gmail.com>. Bring out the story teller in you, transport the children to another world! Volunteer.

Plan to bring your children (age: 7+ ) to the lake on 7th Sept. Time will be intimated later.
