Report on our first theatre workshop

The huge wedding hoardings in our neighbouring marriage convention hall blocked the entrance to our lake from Brigade Millennium side in addition to causing traffic jam right across the gate! We, the PNLIT volunteers were agitated as parents couldn't park their vehicles and had to find a way to bring the children inside the gate. With mercury already rising, it didn't look like a good start to our first theatre workshop that was condyucted on Sunday morning (24th Feb) by Dr. Sonali Sathaye.

Nature had other plans, the cool breeze from the lake and the shade of our Gazebo and trees calmed things down while Sonali worked her magic on the 16 children who had assembled. The wedding, the traffic jam and their noises faded into the background.

The workshop started with a couple of interesting games as ice breakers which made the children get to know each other. Then came the body movement and vocal exercises which made them alert and aware. Enactment with expressions - exaggerated expressions - made them laugh at each other's silliness.

Sonali then made the kids do an interesting exercise of observing any movement in and around the lake and enacting it. Initial hesitancy had given way to openness and the children flapped their hands happily like birds and butterflies, swayed like trees, rowed boats and drove cars!

Lastly, teams were made and each was given a short scene to enact (that included the movement and expressions learned earlier), which the audience had to guess. How those two hours flew by, we couldn't say (though the traffic jam and the honks were still going strong!!).

We asked the children to share their experiences and here is what a couple of them said:

The workshop was great fun on the whole. At first, I was nervous. But later, I became more involved. It was fun working in groups. I got to know a lot of people. It was done in a simple yet engaging manner. I am glad I came.

The theatre workshop conducted by Sonali aunty at Puttenahalli Lake was an interesting event. First she made us observe all the living and non- living things in the lake and then told us to act like those things. I learnt to make different types of movements and expressions. She taught us to speak clearly, slowly and loudly. I learnt to be confident and not be shy. I want to attend more events like this at the lake.
Jayadithya (10 years old)

We look forward to hosting more of such events which connect both children and adults to the natural world around us.

A poetic tribute from a visitor to our lake

Our meetings with visitors to the lake happen either by prior appointment or by chance. We see someone looking intently at a bird or a tree or at one of our information boards. Invariably, we will go up to that person introduce ourselves and start talking.  If they happen to have a camera, you can pretty much be certain that we will strike up a conversation with the stranger. Much like Coleridge's ancient mariner. :-)  Each stranger could be a potential resource person who can help us and the lake with their knowledge, time or a donation. It doesn't matter if they are none of these. We hope they will come more frequently and develop a bond with the lake, with Nature.

Our meeting with Dr. Harini Santhanam, a post doctoral researcher at IISc. on 21st Sept. was by design. We were excited to meet someone who could give us some tips on conservation. She did exactly that. Our discussion lasted for nearly two hours and was a brainstorming of ideas and sharing experiences.

Meetings  prearranged or accidental are followed up with an email, usually from us. Dr. Harini however wrote a poem after her visit to the lake. We were reminded of Padma Bhushan Smt. Sudha Ragunathan's song in praise of lakes she'd sung at the PNLIT fund raiser concert in Feb.

Such tributes come from the heart and we cherish them.
Thank you, Dr. Harini!

Best
Usha

Lake of love
By Dr Harini Santhanam

What is a lake?
I asked myself
A being of joy said they
who cared for it and nurtured it
day by day, everyday!
What did you do when the going had been tough, asked I
We pulled up our sleeves and got help, said they
We observed and not merely looked on
And we cured the maladies that affected the lake-soul each day
What do you do when the going gets tough these days,
asked I, again.
We have each other's shoulders for support, said they
to keep the lake alive and happy, come what may!
You call it lake conservation -
We call it lake nourishment
Then I knew that the secret road map for sustainable development
really did exist - in passion and love for Nature
In a sweet Cosmic Play, perhaps
Nature's maladies and Nature's cures,
start and end in human hearts!

Get your children interested in Nature

Our lake is attracting more and more children from the neighbourhood to birding.
Needless to say, it hones their observation and photography skill as well. Vishnu Sreenivas, one of the first children to get associated with PNLIT, started a group called PNLIT Birders on Facebook and he has got several of his friends to join it. One of them is Pramit, his 9th Std classmate. See his post on Facebook below. The boys visit the lake regularly with some others of their age, all of them passionate about birds! Get your children interested in Nature. Bring them to the lake.

Spotted Owlets

At the Coconut Groove

I found these of 19-Jan-2014. It was just luck that the owlets moved, making it able for me to stop them. Ill consider myself lucky to find then in the open, especially two! The tree that i found them is right next to a cement structure, very close to the footpath of the lake, just beyond the coconut groove fence.

The Owlets are still there, not in the open where i found them, but in one of the trees in the vicinity. Its protected inside the branches of the coconut tree, but still visible with some good binoculars or a long telephoto lens. - at Puttenahalli Lake.
